Renting the Board
Nearly all resorts have rental facilities. When purchasing your lift ticket, check for beginner packages which include the lift ticket, rental and lessons - all for a reduced price. Boards are measured in centimeters. For example, I board a "163" (meaning 163 centimeters long). When selecting a board, you will typically want a board that comes up to your chest when standing. Once you find the optimum board size remember its measurements for the next time.

What is Your Stance?
Next determine if you are goofy or regular.(Right foot forward or left foot forward?) If you have experience with skateboarding or surfing then use the same stance. Otherwise it doesn't really matter, but once you start one way it is very hard to switch. Tere are various techniques designed to determine whether someone is regular or goofy. Some say, have someone push you from behind, whichever foot you catch yourself with should be your front foot on the snowboard. Others say that if you run real fast on a waxed kitchen floor then stop and slide, the foot that naturally extends forward is the one that you should lead with. Probably a few more boarders are regular than goofy.

Before leaving the rental facility, make sure:
Your board has a leash.
There are no loose screws on the bindings.
You are able to strap or step your feet securely into the bindings.
